Thomas W. Robinson and Damarias Tappenden were married in London, England on October 30, 1847. The couple took voyage on June 1, 1850, from Liverpool in a sailboat, landing at New York on July 15th. They eventually settled in Chatham Township near the western edge of the township. This cemetery was a burial vault dug back into the side of a hill on the Robinson family farm.
December 2, 1904 Medina Gazette (pg. 7) – Spencer News
“The death of Thomas Robinson occurred Monday at 2 a.m., coming very suddenly and unexpectedly. His health had been fairly good for a man of his age until about 9 o’clock Sunday night, when severe suffering set in, but ended mercifully in those few hours. The funeral will take place Wednesday at his home. The burial will be upon his own farm, in a vault upon which the deceased had expended much personal labor and planning, and is one of the most unique of its kind.”
September 26, 1913 Medina Gazette (pg. 8) – from the obituary of Mrs. Thos. Robinson
“She departed this life Sept. 6, 1913, aged 89 years and four months, and was laid to rest by the side of her
husband “in the little cottage on the hill”, as she loved to call their resting place, which was prepared by the husband during the last year of his life.”
The bodies were later moved to the Chatham cemetery on October 19, 1922 (per Chatham sexton’s records). Their stone is now found in Plat 2, Lot 63 of Chatham cemetery. It reads:
