LANCE
Maud, infant daughter of Frank D. & Annie, no dates
(There is no headstone for Maud Lance. The obituary for her father, Frank D. Lance (Medina County Gazette, March 21, 1913, pg. 8) is the only mention of this child: “….he afterwards married Mrs. Annie Boise of Lafayette. To them one child was born, little Maud, who died in infancy.” Given that Frank’s first wife was already buried here, this would seem to be the probable final resting place for Maud as well. Her mother is buried in Section 8, Lot 13 but that area of the cemetery wasn’t purchased until 1911 and Maud must have died at least a few years before that.)
Lot 14 (JACOB BAIR)
WOTRING
W.E., Sept. 7, 1869 – Dec. 2, 1928
Lot 15 (FRANK MALLERY)
(Despite the presence of a marker for her on this lot, sexton’s records show Mary Boise is buried in Section 5, Lot 16. That lot is owned by Leroy Boise.)
Lot 16 (HIRAM N. THOMAS)
THOMAS
Hiram, Dec. 7, 1830 – May 25, 1901
Mary, his wife, July 21, 1833 – June 24, 1916
Lot 17 (PETER BOWMAN)
BOWMAN
Peter, December 4, 1817 – February 10, 1911
Sevilla Waltz, his wife, died about 1908
(There is a large stone found here with `BOWMAN’ on it that has no names, dates, or headstones identifying individuals. Sexton’s records show the lot as belonging to Peter Bowman. The names and dates above can be found in the February 17, 1911 edition of the Medina County Gazette (page 6). Peter’s death record also verifies his burial in this cemetery. In addition to this lot, Peter Bowman owns Lot 7 in Section 4. It is possible that Peter and Sevilla could be buried there but records of the Union Cemetery Association show that Peter purchased this lot on April 24, 1900. The fact that Peter purchased this lot when he did, as well as the newer `BOWMAN’ monument found there, would seem to suggest that not only are Peter and Sevilla buried in this lot but that the other lot might not have had enough room for Peter and Sevilla by 1900. That lot only has two known graves in it; both of which are marked by headstones. That should leave several gravesites still available for use.)
Lot 18 (J. MILLER)
There are no known burials on this lot.
Lot 19 (WILLIAM E. CARLTON)
There are no known burials on this lot.
Lot 20 (FRED L. BAKER)
BAKER
Forest, son of Fred L. & Nellie, February 9, 1909 – April 23, 1909
(No headstone; information obtained from his death certificate which verifies his burial in this cemetery. Presumably he would be buried on his father’s lot.)
Lot 21 (P. BOCKES)
There are no known burials on this lot.
Lot 22 (JAMES ROBERTSON)
There are no known burials on this lot.
James Robertson and his wife Elizabeth were only in Lafayette Twp. from 1850 to 1854 so why did they purchase a lot in this cemetery? The Illustrated History and Biographical Record of Lenawee County, Michigan by John I. Knapp, Richard Illenden Bonner, 1903 (page 380) sheds some possible light on the matter. By 1850 the couple already had eight children – verified by their appearance in the 1850 census for Lafayette Twp. – and would have a total of twelve. The book mentions that there was a pair of twin boys that died in infancy. The children’s names are listed in the order of their births and, while the infants are listed last, they are the only two without birthdates given. There are no headstones on this lot but the deaths of those twins could be the reason the lot was purchased.
