The February 17, 1888 edition of the Medina County Gazette (page 5) tells how he was an inmate at the infirmary and Lafayette pioneer; though it makes no mention of his place of burial. Based on the information in his son Henry’s obituary (mentioned below), we know him to be buried here.)
ALGER
Henry, November 7, 1849 – March 3, 1890
(No headstone; the March 14, 1890 edition of the Medina County Gazette provides the above information and indicated that he was buried in the “South Cemetery beside his father, mother, and a brother who died many years ago”. The 1850 census for Lafayette Township shows his parents are John and Ellen Alger. The identity of his brother is unknown.)

Harland F., son of ???, died Sept. 17, 18??, aged ?????(This stone is extremely worn. The names of his parents – including their last name – cannot be read. The 1870 Lafayette census shows a Harlin A. Grim, age 9, living with George W. and Mary M. Grim. If this is the same person then, presumably, he is the son of George W. & Sarah A. Grim. His age on his headstone cannot be read although the first number appears to resemble a 9 (years) and a number 7 can be seen as part of the months or days.)

Eben, died May 5, 1889, aged 76 yrs 7m “FATHER”
Marion S., wife of Eben, born Feb. 6, 1818, died Dec. 24, 1905 “MOTHER”
(The May 10, 1889 edition of the Medina County Gazette (page 5) tells of Eben Chapin’s passing and relays that “The funeral was held in the Congregational Church in Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon, and the remains were placed in the church cemetery for their final rest.” Eben had long been affiliated with the Congregational Church (since about 1840); even serving as Deacon for several years. The Congregational Church was on the property directly north of the current Lafayette Market. So far as is known there was never a cemetery there. Eben actually owned the Shaw cemetery property from 1837 until 1855 so it would be reasonable to presume that his daughter Emily, who died in 1854, would have been buried here. This cemetery was likely affiliated with the Congregational Church. Additional information: Perrin, Battle and Goodspeed, History of Medina County, pg. 837.)

MEAD
Mary, daughter of J & D, died Apr. 29, 1839, AE. 10ys 10m
Mary has another headstone in Chatham cemetery in Chatham Township. On that stone can be found the following information:
MEAD
John, died Dec. 27, 1882, aged 79 years
Nancy B., his wife, died Oct. 25, 1885, aged 75 yrs
Deborah, wife of John, died Oct. 19, 1844, aged 39 yrs 2mos
Children of J & D:
Ellen, died Dec. 1, 1842, aged 2 mos
Mary, died Apr. 29, 1839, aged 10 yrs 10 mos
Nancy, died Mar. 19, 1836, aged 6 yrs
MEAD
Sarah, wife of John, died June 5, 1847, aged 42 yrs 2ms
John P., son of J & S, died June 14, 1853, aged 6 yrs 2mos
Old sexton’s records for Chatham cemetery show that lot as “full” and with four burials yet the headstone lists eight names. The section of the cemetery where that lot is located was not developed until 1872 but six of the eight people listed died before that time. Medina County Land Records show that John Mead purchased land in Lafayette Township in December of 1833 and then left for Chatham Township in April of 1863. Given that time frame, it would seem pretty likely that John’s first two wives and his children were all buried here originally. The only question would be whether or not they were moved to Chatham Cemetery. No other stones can be found at Shaw for the Meads.

KUSS
Lydia Ann, died January 11, 1884, aged 57 years
(No headstone; the information was obtained from her death record which shows her as both residing and dying in Lafayette Township. The 1870 census for Lafayette Township shows a Lydia A. Kuss married to a John F. Kuss. In addition, the January 18, 1884 edition of the Medina County Gazette (page 1) refers to her as Mrs. John Kuss. Presumably she would be buried here.

LYONS
James Levi, October 9, 1846 – June 18, 1929
Lucinda, wife of James Levi, died March 14, 1908, aged 61 years, 11 months, 9 days
(There is no headstone for James or Lucinda Lyons. The information for James was obtained from his death certificate which lists him as buried in Shaw Cemetery. The information for Lucinda was obtained from her death record although her burial in this cemetery is presumed based on her husband’s and son’s burials. The 1900 census for Lafayette Township tells us that Edward is the son of James and Lucinda. It is a possibility that they would be buried on the same lot as their son.)

KLINE
Alma, June 22, 1899 – April 10, 1975
(A broken metal funeral home marker used to be in this approximate location which said “ALMA” and gave the birthdate of 1899. The last name was missing all of the letters except “KL” and the date of death was also missing. A search of the Medina County Home Register found an entry for an Alma Kline with the above information but nothing about her place of burial. Given the similarities, and that this part of the cemetery was used for County Home burials during that time period, this would appear to be a match.)
NOTE: This lot is marked in sexton’s records as having five County Home burials.
Lot 158
NOTE: This lot is marked in sexton’s records as having four County Home burials.

VOLCHESKY
Alex, 1873 – November 30, 1955
The following persons are known to be buried here without headstones based on the given information:
STEELE
Samuel, July 11, 1822 – March 7, 1885
(Medina County Gazette, March 19, 1885 edition, page 5: tells how Samuel Steele died at his home in Lafayette and was “laid to rest in the country cemetery near at hand”. The 1874 Medina County Atlas shows that he owned property on the west side of the road across from Shaw cemetery.)
AVERILL
Elijah, died July 26, 1894
(Medina County Gazette, August 2, 1894 edition, pg. 1: tells that his remains were deposited in the South Cemetery (Lafayette).)
WALTERS
William, died December 21, 1892, aged 76 yrs
(Death records provide the above information. The Medina County Gazette, December 29, 1892 edition, page 1 tells that his remains were deposited in the Shaw Cemetery. Possibly buried on Lot 141.)
WALTERS
Catharine, wife of William, died February 24, 1897, aged 79 years
(Information obtained from her death record. She lived and died in Lafayette Twp. and seems to match William’s wife as found in the 1870 Lafayette Twp. census. Given that he is buried here it is presumed that she would be also. Possibly buried on Lot 141.)
FLEMING
William, died September 1, 1927, aged 77 yrs 11m 1d
(Medina County Gazette, September 9, 1927, page 8 tells of his death in Cleveland, Ohio and his burial at Shaw cemetery. His date of death is from Longacre Funeral Home records. Possibly buried on Lot 111.)
MONG
Ruth Marie, daughter of George & Bertha, born November 7, 1903, died December 13, 1906
(Medina County Gazette, December 14, 1906, page 8 tells of her “burial at Shaw’s Cemetery, Lafayette”. Additional information was obtained from her birth record and her death record.)
MESSER
Zerilda B., died April 6, 1963, aged 76 years
(Medina County Gazette, April 11, 1963, page 8 tells of her death at the County Home and her burial at Shaw cemetery.)
The following individuals are known to be buried here without headstones. Information obtained from their death certificates:
MYERS
Infant of Leon J. & Lena E., gender unknown; miscarriage, born dead on March 4, 1909
(No place of burial is listed on this child’s death certificate. The child was born in Lafayette Twp. and Lena is a daughter of George M. Shaw meaning the child would probably have been buried here.)
ALGER
Urial S., April 7, 1875 – April 3, 1911
(His death certificate gives his place of burial as “Lafayette”. Presumably he is buried here since several of his family members can be found here as well.)
MALLERY
Ford Lile, son of Blaine & Emma, Dec. 1915 – Feb. 17, 1916
VANASDAL
Harold, son of S.J. & Effie M., Apr. 9, 1919 – Apr. 12, 1919
LEHMAN
Infant daughter of Clinton Wightman & Susan Lehman, born & died May 25, 1920
WALTERS
Peter Jack, Aug. 14, 1846 – Jan. 14, 1922 (possibly Lot 141)
WALTERS
Dan C., Oct. 21, 1884 – July 26, 1932 (possibly Lot 141)
HEATH
Ola Jennings, Jan. 25, 1863 – Jan. 1, 1935
The following individuals are known to have been buried in Shaw cemetery and then reinterred elsewhere based on the provided information:
DAY
Caroline, wife of Zebina, born about 1824, died 1857
Per the April 7, 1905 Medina County Gazette, page 1:
“Zebina Day and Laura Clark went to Lorain Monday to be present at the burial of Mr. Day’s granddaughter. His wife, whose remains were disinterred at the Shaw cemetery, were taken to that place for re-interment.”
Laura Clark’s death certificate gives her mother’s name as Caroline. The 1856 census for Canaan Twp., Iowa shows Caroline, age 32, living with her husband and daughter. A writeup on Zebina Day in the February 11, 1910 edition of the Medina County Gazette (pg. 1) tells us when Caroline died.
BOSTWICK
Abel, died April 20, 1861, aged 63 years
When Abel Bostwick sold the cemetery property to the Lafayette Township trustees on January 5, 1860 he put in a stipulation that he retain the rights to two burial lots on the property (see this cemetery’s LAND ACQUISITIONS section for more detailed information). Bostwick died April 20, 1861 and, presumably, would have been buried in Shaw cemetery in one of those two lots. Abel’s wife Sally died on August 29, 1869 and both she and Abel appear on a headstone in Mound Hill Cemetery in Seville, Ohio. Records for Mound Hill show that in 1869 a lot was purchased by Abner F. Bostwick, the son of Abel and Sally. While Mound Hill’s records don’t show any date of reinterment, it appears that Sally was buried at Mound Hill when she died whereas Abel was disinterred from Shaw cemetery and reinterred in Seville. There is no tombstone for the Bostwicks at Shaw and it is not clear where the two Bostwick lots were although they would have been somewhere in the middle section that was deeded by Abel.
COULTER
Allen, January 26, 1813 – October 17, 1857
A STRANGE AFFAIR IN CHATHAM (Medina County Gazette, September 27, 1878 edition, pg. 7)
Our Chatham correspondent gives a singular account of the finding of a human skeleton on the land of Francis Packard, a few rods west of Chatham Center. Since that was written the bones have been identified as the remains of Wm. Coulter, formerly of Westfield, who died 21 years ago this fall, and was buried in Lafayette. Last fall his remains were taken up and removed to the Chatham cemetery and reinterred. A broken bone in the right leg, and the peculiar shape of the skull, caused some to surmise that the skeleton might possibly be that of Mr. Coulter. Upon examination of his grave, it was discovered that his bones were all gone but one belonging to the fore-arm. Upon investigation this proved to be missing in the skeleton, and to compare and fit with the other bones. A strange mystery hangs over the case.
The article refers to him as “Wm. Coulter” but a search of burials in Chatham Cemetery show him as Allen Coulter. His name appears on a headstone there; from which the above dates were taken. The 1850 census for Westfield Twp. lists his household within proximity of those of Erastus Simmons, Simpson Simmons, and Abraham B. Chamberlin – all of whom can be found residing in the northern part of Westfield Township in the 1874 Medina County Atlas (pg. 78). No connection can be made with the Coulters and Lafayette Township – there are no headstones or known burials there with that name. Given his known residence in Westfield Twp. – and the proximity of this cemetery to that area – this would seem one possible place for his original burial.
