(Matthew Leffingwell and his wife settled in Lafayette Township in 1834. They moved to Litchfield Township in 1854 but when their daughter Lydia died in 1835 she must have been buried in Lafayette Township. Matthew’s name appears as one of the original members of the Chippeway Cemetery Association (Spitzer Cemetery) so it would not be a stretch to assume that that was the cemetery where she was laid to rest. This section of the cemetery wasn’t even purchased until 1858 – over twenty years after she died. The only question is whether or not her body was reinterred here later. There is no headstone for her at Spitzer Cemetery.)

NOTE: The October 1, 1880 edition of the Medina County Gazette (pg. 3) tells that Susan T. Button was born in Saratoga County, N.Y. on July 9, 1794. She lived mostly in Vermont until 1842 and then moved to Portage County, Ohio for 11 years before coming to Litchfield. Given this information, and that their deaths predate the purchase of this area of the cemetery, all three of the Button children (Hannah, Charlotte, and Lydia) were likely buried elsewhere. Whether or not they were ever reinterred here is not known.
